Sherman was not critical of his adversary, however, whom he befriended after the war. He later wrote that Johnston’s army was always:

“covered and protected by the best line of field intrenchments I have ever seen, prepared long in advance. No officer or soldier who ever served under me will question the generalship of Joseph E. Johnston. His retreats were timely, in good order, and he left nothing behind.”103

Confederate President Davis did not share Sherman’s admiration for Johnston, however. Upset that his general had surrendered so much terrain to the Federals with barely a fight, Davis considered replacing him since he shared the view expressed by the Augusta Daily Constitutionalist at the start of the Atlanta Campaign when it advised Johnston that: “The approaches to the Gate City—every one of them—must be made a second Thermopylae.”104 Johnston’s actions during the campaign fell far short of that expectation. Unfazed by a plan Johnston proposed to attack the enemy as they crossed Peach Tree Creek, Davis replaced Johnston, naming General John Hood commander of the Confederate Army of Tennessee on July 17.

Hood had risen from cavalry captain in the Confederate army at the start of the war to corps commander by the start of the Atlanta Campaign. He had a reputation as a fearless fighter. He lost the permanent use of his left arm from a wound suffered during the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863 and had his right leg amputated, four inches from the hip, from a wound received during the fight at Chickamauga, Georgia, in September 1863. At thirty-three years of age, Hood was the youngest army commander in the Confederacy.
